We've been to Greece one time and are dying to go back again to explore some more. We were there for about two weeks and had the opportunity to explore Athens, some of the Greek Mainland, and a couple of the Greek Islands. For this trip, we rented a car (Economy Car Rentals) to do our exploring. You've probably heard that there can be some challenging driving in Greece, and that is true. You need to feel comfortable driving in a big city to get around Athens without a lot of trepidation. Out in the rest of the country, at least the parts we saw, driving was easy and at times just down right fun. A word of warning: the road signs are in Greek! It may seem obvious to mention that, but remember that the Greek alphabet character set is not at all like you encounter in daily life. That is unless, you have a back ground in science, math, or were a fraternity or sorority member! In fact, our Latin alphabet system is derived from the Greek alphabet. it helps to have studied the alphabet a bit before you get to Greece to make it easier to interpret the road signs. The way we handled this situation was pretty simple. Steve has a background in the sciences so is well versed in the Greek alphabet. As he was driving, Carol would look out for the traffic signs. She would tell him the shapes of the characters she saw on the signs. Steve would do a transliteration while Carol looked for the symbols on the maps. This scheme worked out pretty well.
